Ric Stern; Founder, Performance Director, Senior Coach
Ric founded RST in 1998, and has been creating champions ever since. Following the completion of his degree in Sports Science, where he obtained a first class BSc (Hons) degree from the University of Brighton, Ric Saw a need for science based coaching solutions. Richard is a certified Association of British Cycling Coaches Level 3 cycle coach. Richard has authored research work, had articles published in specialist cycling magazines, newspapers, and web articles.

Under his guidance, riders have achieved numerous national championship wins, moved from amateur to professional ranks and have found in Ric a steady hand guiding their journey as elite cyclists. With a solid background in science and a commitment to
evidence based methods, Ric delivers successful programs to his clients’ year on year.

In addition he has develop RST into Europe’s leading provider of coaching to cyclists, and now oversees the new direction of RST towards becoming Europe’s leading source of performance expertise for athletes in many sports. Ric continues to race when time allows, and has been competing since 1984. He has competed in a wide spectrum of cycling events from club time trials, national championships, hill climbs, 12 hour TTs, criteriums, and stage races. Richard rode the 1990 Route de Tour and in 1991 and 1995 completed an ambition of racing abroad.

 

Alex Simmons; Technical Director, Senior Coach
An accredited Cycling Australia Coach, Commissaire and regular track and road cycling competitor himself, Alex’s recent cycling success includes winning a State Championship title in the Teams Pursuit (his favourite event) and making the podium at National Masters Track, State Criterium and Team Time Trial Championships. Following an accident in 2007 which resulted in a lower leg amputation, Alex has made a successful return to competitive bike racing including the World Masters Track Championships and is a dual Oceania Paralympic Road Cycling Champion and dual Silver Medallist at the Australian Paralympic Road Racing Championships.
Alex regularly provides advice and insight into the use and application of the latest power analysis tools and is a proponent of scientific and professionally-based coaching principles. He holds a Bachelors Degree from the ANU (Mathematics, Physics) and writes for an e-magazine group Velosportz Media and Bike Radar.

Alex coaches riders from the UK, Europe, USA and Australia including riders seeking to get into better shape for Etape and club tour events, club and Masters level racers in track, road and criterium racing disciplines looking to nail their local events and championships, through to elite/Category 1 riders seeking National Team Selection.

Alex's clients have attained World and National Championship wins as well as setting a new World Record.

 

Gavin Atkins
Gavin’s experience of cycle racing goes back over 20 years and encompasses virtually every discipline in cyclesport. A BC accredited coach, Gavin has coached some of the most successful UK MTB endurance teams ever - scoring well over 10 podiums in 12 and 24hr solo and team racing in the last 3 years.

As an athlete he has won over 25 races in MTB, Road Race, Time Trial and Cyclocross, but his most proud achievements are representing team GB at the MTB Worlds as a junior in 1991, and a Master athlete in 2004. Most recently he has also competed in the inaugural Trans Scotland and the prestigious Trans Rockies race, which was an experience that has given him new insights into the demands of ultra endurance events. Gavin’s degree in Engineering
Management and background in process engineering and software development give him a structured approach to training prescription, and one that is soundly based in evidence based principles, whilst still allowing for creativity and finding a way that works for each athlete.

Gavin’s career has been immersed in the technicalities of elite sports performance for more than 15 years and his passion is for using science and experience to enhance athletes capabilities and belief.

 

Jostein Moene
Jostein working in the fitness industry at the age of 18 building a chain of 7 fitness centre by offering great personal service and getting impressive results with clients. Whilst working as a leader in group exercise classes and as a personal trainer, Jostein also raced bicycles with some success. A stint in the cycle industry coincided with his introduction to RST.

He started training with power devices more than 3 years ago and has come through the RST system from an athlete to a coach. Under Ric
Stern’s guidance, Jostein has seen at first hand the big benefits of the system in place for RST. Having guided hundreds of individuals to enhanced personal fitness over the years it was a natural progression for Jostein to qualify as a coach and join RST as our first Nordic coach.

 

Dave Willmott
In 2003 David became an accredited coach with Cycling Australia and has been coaching at various levels since then. As a competition cyclist himself, David is a ‘hard core’ sprinter but from a coaching perspective has a keen interest of all forms of endurance cycling.

Dave started competitive cycling in late 1968 and by March 1970 represented NSW in the Australian Juvenile Track Championships where he gained a bronze for the sprint competition. He continued cycling in the following years as a junior representing NSW in track and road championships.
In 1972 he won gold in the Australian Junior 800 metre time trial championship in a record time of 57.2 seconds.

A return to competition in 2000 has brought him numerous masters’ titles including a superb world track title. Dave’s experience of enhancing performance while running a successful business has given him insight into planning programs for RST athletes to optimal use of their training time.

 

Xavier Disley
Birmingham based Xavier brings an exceptional track record in sports performance research and coaching knowledge to RST. His innovative work both as part of his PhD and externally in sports performance business, allied to his ability as a rider and coach, further strengthens the breadth and depth of experience within RST. He has excelled in sport, science and business and in particular his work in aerodynamics and ergonomics adds significantly to the technical edge RST can offer individuals and teams.

 

Jon Baker
Jon has a first class degree in sport and exercise science, and has performed a range of research studies as part of a PhD in exercise physiology. His research has focused on understanding the physiological mechanisms which underpin exercise tolerance, and how these processes determine endurance performance. As former pro-elite mountain biker and occasional road racer, he has competed in over 200 events from 2 to 24hrs, and so adds a wealth of competition experience to the RST roster.

Using his RST fusion of scientific knowledge and practical experience, coupled with extensive teaching practice, Jon is able to deliver complex theory in easily digestible and practical bite size
chunks. His applied work has spanned from triathlon, through the many flavours of cycle sport onto ultra-endurance running. He has worked with recreational athletes, national champions, and also individuals competing at the youth Olympic Games and World Championships.

 

Neil Kent
With a Masters degree in Sport and Exercise science and extensive experience as a competitor and coach, Neil Kent is a knowledgeable and insightful endurance and conditioning specialist.

A successful coach and personal trainer with a great track record in conditioning athletes in numerous sports, Neil brings additional breadth to the RST service addition to working with cyclists and triathletes he will lead the work we undertake in corporate well-being and motor sport.
